Body as Lines

Overview

To understand the guard, the body must be interpreted as a system of lines, which represent barriers to be overcome.

The Four Lines of Defense

1️⃣ Line 1: Feet

  • Function: First line of defense
  • Purpose: Controls distance
  • Tools: Push, post, hook
  • Range: Long distance

2️⃣ Line 2: Knees

  • Function: Secondary barrier
  • Purpose: Power generation point
  • Tools: Shield, frame, pinch
  • Range: Mid-range control

3️⃣ Line 3: Hips

  • Function: Critical control point
  • Purpose: Center of movement
  • Tools: Bridge, shrimp, rotate
  • Range: Close range

4️⃣ Line 4: Shoulders/Head

  • Function: Final defensive line
  • Purpose: Frame creation and submission defense
  • Tools: Frame, turn, protect neck
  • Range: Emergency defense

How Lines Work Together

Each line supports the others. When one line is compromised, the others must compensate:

  • Feet gone? β†’ Knees become primary defense
  • Knees passed? β†’ Hips must create distance
  • Hips controlled? β†’ Shoulders frame for survival

Application in Guard

Understanding this system is crucial for both:

  • πŸ›‘οΈ Guard players - Maintain your lines
  • βš”οΈ Guard passers - Systematically defeat each line

Connection to Guard Types

Different guards emphasize different lines:

  • Spider Guard β†’ Maximizes Line 1 (feet)
  • Half Guard β†’ Focuses on Line 2 (knees)
  • Deep Half β†’ Uses Line 3 (hips)
  • Frame Guards β†’ Emphasizes Line 4 (shoulders)
