Body as Lines
Overviewβ
To understand the guard, the body must be interpreted as a system of lines, which represent barriers to be overcome.
The Four Lines of Defenseβ
1οΈβ£ Line 1: Feetβ
- Function: First line of defense
- Purpose: Controls distance
- Tools: Push, post, hook
- Range: Long distance
2οΈβ£ Line 2: Kneesβ
- Function: Secondary barrier
- Purpose: Power generation point
- Tools: Shield, frame, pinch
- Range: Mid-range control
3οΈβ£ Line 3: Hipsβ
- Function: Critical control point
- Purpose: Center of movement
- Tools: Bridge, shrimp, rotate
- Range: Close range
4οΈβ£ Line 4: Shoulders/Headβ
- Function: Final defensive line
- Purpose: Frame creation and submission defense
- Tools: Frame, turn, protect neck
- Range: Emergency defense
How Lines Work Togetherβ
Each line supports the others. When one line is compromised, the others must compensate:
- Feet gone? β Knees become primary defense
- Knees passed? β Hips must create distance
- Hips controlled? β Shoulders frame for survival
Application in Guardβ
Understanding this system is crucial for both:
- π‘οΈ Guard players - Maintain your lines
- βοΈ Guard passers - Systematically defeat each line
Connection to Guard Typesβ
Different guards emphasize different lines:
- Spider Guard β Maximizes Line 1 (feet)
- Half Guard β Focuses on Line 2 (knees)
- Deep Half β Uses Line 3 (hips)
- Frame Guards β Emphasizes Line 4 (shoulders)
